Skilled Labor Staffing

The Challenge

The client needed workforce flexibility without losing the chance to build future leaders.

For a manufacturing facility, labor needs can shift quickly. Caterpillar maintains a portion of its workforce as contingent labor so the business can stay responsive to market demand without slowing production.

However, the contingent model also served a larger purpose. It gave the client a way to consider people who may not have made it through a traditional hiring process, but still had the skill, attitude, and reliability to succeed on the floor.

Some candidates were part-time students. Some were new welders entering the workforce. Some needed a practical entry point where they could show what they were capable of in a real manufacturing environment.

The challenge was creating a workforce pathway that gave the client room to evaluate talent while giving workers a fair chance to grow into long-term roles.
The opportunity was to create a better entry point for people with long-term potential.

The Approach

We started with operational listening.

The team listened closely to the client’s process, the expectations on the floor, and the pain points shaping hiring and retention.

Listen to the client’s operation

Understand how talent moves through the floor

Identify overlooked potential

Instead of relying only on a resume, we helped Caterpillar see the person behind the application, including the work ethic, readiness, and potential a traditional screening process might miss.

For candidates who needed specific experience, Vision Companies helped create practical pathways. In one example, workers gained forklift experience through a temporary placement before transitioning into roles with Caterpillar where that experience was required.

From Floor Roles to Future Leaders

The long-term value showed up in who stayed and grew.

Vision Companies did more than help the client meet immediate labor needs. Over the years, workers placed through The Vision Companies stayed with the organization, continued growing, and in some cases moved into leadership roles.

Career progression is one of the clearest signs of the partnership’s value. People who started on the floor brought practical knowledge, lived experience, and a stronger understanding of the work into the way they led.

For the client, the pipeline is a way to bring in people who could build a future inside the organization.
The strongest proof is in who stayed, grew, and became part of the company’s leadership path.

A Pathway Into the Workforce

One placement can change the direction of a career.

In one case, we placed an 18-year-old welder into a role and helped her understand what it would take to move toward full-time employment.

She entered the process without a resume. Vision Companies helped her take the next step, understand expectations, and see a possible path forward inside the workforce.

Her story shows why the entry point matters. A candidate who may not have been easy to evaluate on paper was given a chance to show her ability in the work itself.

Candidate Story

From no resume to a real career path.

An 18-year-old welder with no formal resume. The Vision Companies helped her understand the expectations, navigate the process, and build a credible path toward permanent employment at Caterpillar.

The Outcome

Stronger retention, stronger referrals, and a deeper talent pipeline.

Higher retention among placed workers

More candidate referrals from people already on the floor

Stronger pathway from contingent roles to permanent employment

A trusted relationship built over years

Why People-First Staffing Works

Contingent labor can become part of a stronger talent ecosystem.

A contingent workforce gives employers flexibility. With the right partner, it can also become a structured way to identify strong people earlier, reduce hiring friction, and create clearer paths into long-term roles.

The Vision Companies takes time to understand the operation, the client’s workforce needs, and the potential each worker brings into the process. This helps employers meet immediate needs while building a more reliable pipeline for the future.
