Dealing With a Difficult Manager

By May 17, 2021 May 20th, 2021 Job Seekers

No matter how hard you try, there will always be people in your life that rub you the wrong way. It can become a big problem when that person is your boss. If you’re working for a less-than-perfect manager, how can you make the most of it and still perform at the top of your game? Here are some helpful tips for dealing with a difficult manager.

Learn What Makes Them Tick

Issues with your manager could stem from something as simple as the way they think. You may have a very different way of looking at the world, and that’s fine. But getting into their shoes and mindset to better understand where they’re coming from can help you change the way you communicate with them.

Take Ownership

It may be second nature to blame the problems all on your boss, but sometimes you have to take ownership of your role. Looking at how your reactions may be causing more negative feelings can help you turn it around and approach it differently.

Utilize Your Leadership Skills

Maybe it’s time for you to take the initiative in the situation. If you see things that need to get done and have the skills and ability to take the lead, do it. You will put yourself in a leadership role that will hopefully make up for some of the direction lacking if your boss doesn’t hold up their end of the bargain.

Be Discrete

It can be easy to give in to the temptation to discuss your boss with your coworkers. But the truth is, you never know someone else’s experience. Other team members may not have a problem with the way they manage. Don’t use them as a sounding board to vent. You also never know when this information can get to the wrong people.

Find a new Job

Sometimes, your personality conflicts can’t be solved. When you’ve reached the end of your rope, it’s time to look for a new opportunity. Begin to apply with recruiters who can keep your search confidential so you can leave when the time is right.
