Fearing a Potential Recession? How to Prepare as a Temporary Worker

By April 3, 2023 May 2nd, 2023 Job Seekers

Are you working short-term, temporary assignments? Temp work can be a great way to make extra money and have flexibility, but it can feel overwhelming when a potential recession is looming overhead. The fear of not having a job or not being able to find the next opportunity is scary. But here are a few ways to prepare yourself for a potential recession.

Update Your Resume and More

Ensuring your resume is in good shape is never a bad idea. You never know when you might need to start looking for a job, though a recession might make the need more urgent. Update your resume with as much data and statistics as you can, showing how you achieved your accomplishments and used your skills in practical ways. Also, update your LinkedIn profile and create a cover letter template you can customize when sending applications.

Reach Out to Other Staffing Agencies

If you’re working with a staffing agency to find temporary assignments, you can double your chances by working with another agency. There is no non-compete; you can apply for and work for as many staffing services as are available to you. Not all agencies get the same jobs, so you open yourself up to new opportunities by applying with another service.

Prepare Your Finances

This is also an excellent time to review your current finances, update your budget, and start saving in your emergency fund. Regularly checking your finances is never a bad idea, but you may be able to get ahead of big problems if a recession happens by being prepared now. When looking at your budget, pay attention to the subscriptions and other charges that build up when you don’t notice and cut some of them out of your budget.

Network More

Now is also the time to spread the word that you’re willing to work short-term projects and gigs to earn extra income or to be flexible with your time. The more you network, the better your chance of finding a great opportunity. And if you’re considering transitioning into a more full-time role, you can also mention that when talking to others.
