How to Ask Your Employer for Training (and Get a Yes!)

By September 26, 2025 Job Seekers

Many employees want to upskill but feel nervous about asking their employer to invest in them. The good news? Most employers want engaged, growing employees and they just need to see how training benefits the company as well as the individual.

Do Your Homework

  • Before you ask, research specific courses, certifications, or programs. Show how they connect to your role and the company’s needs.

Link Training to Business Goals

  • Employers are more likely to say yes when they can see ROI. For example:
    • “This certification will help me reduce downtime on equipment.”
    • “These project management skills will improve team efficiency.”

Offer Solutions

  • Emphasize flexibility. Suggest online learning outside of work hours, or propose a cost-sharing model if budgets are tight.

Frame It as Loyalty

  • Training shows commitment. When employees grow their skills, they’re more likely to stay long term, which saves the company money.

Practice the Conversation

  • Be confident but collaborative:
  • “I’d like to take this course because it will help me __, and I believe it aligns with our team’s goals of __.”

As a final thought, let’s get our head on straight about something: asking for training isn’t asking for a favor; it’s showing initiative. And the right employer will see it as an investment, not an expense! Be open minded and collaborative – genuinely, when you ask.
