Job Summary
The Transmission Line Design Engineer is responsible for engineering, project management, and technical support for transmission line design projects. This position develops safe, reliable, high-quality, and cost-efficient transmission line designs while supporting projects from initial planning and permitting through construction and final as-built documentation.
The engineer will collaborate with other engineers, land rights and permitting teams, field technicians, operators, vendors, and other stakeholders. This role also contributes to internal design standards and equipment specifications and may participate in regional or national industry working groups.

Key Responsibilities
- Perform engineering for transmission line design projects to develop safe, reliable, high-quality, and cost-efficient designs.
- Develop project design drawings and supporting technical documentation.
- Ensure transmission line designs meet applicable strength, loading, and clearance requirements in an economical manner.
- Provide technical support to engineers, Land Rights and Permitting departments, field technicians, operators, and other stakeholders to support the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the transmission system.
- Lead and participate on cross-functional teams responsible for developing and updating internal design standards and equipment specifications.
- Perform project management for small transmission projects as assigned, ensuring financial, functional, and schedule requirements are met.
- Coordinate with internal teams throughout route selection, permitting, land rights coordination, design, vendor approval, construction support, and final documentation.
- Support the development and issuance of project design packages and as-built documents.
- Apply knowledge of transmission line construction and utility-industry technologies to engineering decisions.
- Research and analyze technical issues and develop appropriate engineering recommendations.
- Participate in regional or national working groups as required to expand industry knowledge and help influence industry decisions.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree or advanced degree in Civil Engineering.
- Electrical or Mechanical Engineering degrees may be considered with at least 4 years of transmission line design experience.
- 4+ years of experience in an engineering or science-related position within the utility or a related industry.
- Fundamentals of Engineering (F.E.)/E.I.T. certification.
- Understanding of the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC).
- Extensive knowledge and experience using PLS-CADD and MFAD.
- Understanding of transmission line construction.
- Ability to effectively utilize and assess technologies related to the utility industry.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to research, analyze, and make recommendations related to engineering decisions.
- Strong project management and organizational skills.
- Ability to work effectively within a team environment.
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills with the ability to address primarily technical issues.
Preferred
- 7+ years of transmission line design engineering experience.
- Demonstrated experience designing and building transmission lines operating at 69 kV and 115 kV.
- Experience with route selection, Public Utilities Commission (PUC) permitting support, land rights coordination, design, vendor approval, issue packages, construction support, and as-built documentation.
- Experience designing transmission lines operating at 200+ kV.
- Professional Engineer (PE) registration.
