When I was 15, my dad died. It’s a loss that still echoes through my life. When the G-O-D called him upstairs early, I was devastated. Now, many years later, I carry a deep appreciation for who he was: the way he lived with purpose, the way he showed up. That kind of presence and belief shapes who we become, even long after they’re gone.
Recently, I asked my 6-year-old son what he wanted to be when he grows up. He looked at me, smiled, and with his eyes lighting up, said, “I want to be a daddy when I grow up—with a little boy just like my daddy.”
I froze in that moment and held back tears. It reminded me of the power a good man can have in a child’s life and the quiet, consistent legacy being written right now in our home.
Not every child has a father, but every child needs a mentor. I’ve been abundantly blessed by the people in my life who have stepped into that role. We all need someone who models character, offers guidance, and helps us see who we’re capable of becoming.
Here are a few powerful stats that speak volumes:
- Young adults with a mentor are 55% more likely to enroll in post-secondary education
- 130% more likely to hold leadership roles
- 78% more likely to volunteer regularly
- More likely to develop strong personal values and a lasting sense of purpose
Research also shows that just one caring adult relationship is one of the strongest protective factors for young people. It’s linked to:
- Better mental health outcomes
- Lower rates of substance use and risky behavior
- Greater confidence when facing life’s challenges
Mentorship builds resilience—and resilience shapes futures.
You don’t have to be a parent to make that kind of impact. You just have to be present. And you have to care.
At our company, we see what happens when someone takes the time to walk alongside a new hire, offer encouragement, teach a skill with patience, or simply model integrity. That kind of mentorship can turn a job into a career—and a workplace into a place of belonging.
This Father’s Day, I’ll be thinking about my dad—and the incredible mentor my husband is to our children. I’ll also be thinking of the people who choose, every day, to show up, guide, and build quietly but powerfully.
