Day 2: Hard Days.
We all hear about hard days, and it’s not until we experience things ourself that we can feel them quite the same. My sister called me one morning, she had hit a deer on her way home from the gym early in the morning. With 4 kiddos to get to and from, not to mention herself for work, I knew she needed a car and quick. My husband and I drove over and left a vehicle (he works from home). Being a one car family gave me perspective I hadn’t had before – and allowed me space to give more grace and understanding when others are having hard days….
- Ty came to us a little lost. He wanted to be really close to home and have consistent work. We got him working at a smaller shop that met his needs and more. Upon having a few coaching conversations about attendance we learned that he was going through some personal stuff at home; struggling to make ends meet for others and it was hurting his success. We talked through financial planning/budgeting with him to paint the picture clearly and supported him with other life resources for his current situation to really secure his foundation to be successful as an employee. Eventually, he felt the values of his employer and team and felt safe sharing with them as well which in turn made their relationship stronger. Happy to report he’s thriving, we’re so happy to have been able to encourage him on the hard days!
- An employee called one morning unable to get to work, his check hadn’t arrived and he had been using Uber but couldn’t afford it. There were so many variables at play and he was very stressed but couldn’t think clearly and just wanted to not go/show up and he hung up. He called back, he found a ride. We brainstormed solutions that could work in the future and figured out an adjusted schedule for him to be able to reliably and affordably get to work. We listened and asked questions, we opened up the door and we’re so grateful he called back knowing he was supported.
- Johnny was on an assignment for about a month before he tore a ligament playing a game at the company picnic! What a bummer! He was out of work for a few weeks but when he was ready to return they were thrilled to have him back – he got through the hard days and showed up, worked hard, and kept learning.
It’s a tough time of year for so many of us – but together we can get through it.
Best,
Heather
