How Gen Z Can Differ From Millennials in the Workforce

By June 26, 2023 Managers

Generation Z is beginning to enter the workforce. While Millennials have been the largest cohort since Baby Boomers, and with the younger generation coming on board, they will start to see a shift in the workplace. So what makes GenZ different from Millenials in the workforce? Here are the traits these employees will have and how to integrate them into your team.

Motivated by Security

Unlike millennials, who are known as “job hoppers,” Generation Z is looking for more stability in their career. They want to develop a relationship with an employer who trusts them, invests in them, and provides them with long-term goals and milestones.

More Competitive

Millennials were also known as the collaborative generation. They were derided for everyone getting participation trophies rather than earning anything. While this is an oversimplification, it does mean that they developed more skills around working with others. On the other hand, Generation Z is more rooted in competition and motivated by having goals to reach and beating others to victory.

Independent

Generation Z is also an independent worker. They came of age during the COVID-19 crisis, and some of their first jobs were working from home. They want to be given autonomy to do their job independently and be judged on the results of their work. They respond very negatively to micromanagement.

Face-to-Face Communication

Generation Z likes face-to-face conversations despite our culture’s reliance on text and social media communication. This may also stem from the pandemic and the inability to connect with others for far too long. They would like to have a meeting, even over a video conference, rather than read an email that recaps information.

True Digital Natives

However, don’t assume that GenZ is avoiding technology. They are the first true digital natives in the workforce. Most of them have grown up with a phone or tablet since they were very young. They can use all social media platforms and digital technology, including AI, they were raised with.
