Congratulations, you’re about to start a new job. First-day nerves are totally normal, but being prepared can help you feel more confident as you go into your first day. What do you need to know? Here are our tips to make sure you start day one on the right foot.
Plan Your Commute
You never want to be late to a job. Even if you traveled to the office during your interview, it probably wasn’t during the morning rush hour. Determine how long it will take to get there with traffic and plan ahead. It can help to leave your home about ten minutes earlier than you think you need to.
Do Your Homework
Hopefully, you’ve been given plenty of details about your new job, the chain of command, and the environment. But it can’t hurt to do your research as well. Know who your direct manager is as well as your team lead. Connect with new coworkers on LinkedIn ahead of your start date and introduce yourself.
Dress for Success
When you accepted the job, you probably asked about the dress code. Now it’s your time to interpret it. Whether the dress code is professional or casual, you always want to put your best foot forward. Look nice and professional, even if you’re allowed to wear jeans. And always take cues from others in the office.
Introduce Yourself
Making your own introduction will be as easy as breathing for some people. If you’re less extroverted and more socially awkward, this can be a little more challenging. But we promise that if you put the work into getting to know the people around you, it will be worth it.
Ask Questions
Your direct supervisor would rather have you ask questions during your training than discover that you didn’t fully understand something later. Don’t be afraid to ask for clarification or to understand something better. Always practice active listening and repeat what you’ve heard or write it down.
Practice Self Care
Starting a new job is stressful. It’s okay to come home at the end of the day and feel a little fried. Take time for yourself. Celebrate after your first day by going out to a nice dinner, watching a movie, or getting together with friends. Reward yourself for doing something great.
