12 Days of Christmas Stories: Day 6

Day 6: Family.

A week ago I learned of a client, colleague, and friend that passed away suddenly; he was with us at our Halloween Costume party and I saw him weekly. He was a strong voice amongst peers and a man of great integrity.

At home, my babies have fevers and we’re riding the struggle bus of this crazy cold season like everyone else.

At work,  we celebrated Christmas with our team potluck and secret Santa gift exchange.

All examples are family; family looks different to everyone, the definition, how you interact and the conversations you have. But there is one common thing we can all see – togetherness. Its in the relationships we have with one another in this world and the commitment we make for one another that makes the world go round…

  • Curt’s first language is Spanish, so his daughter came along and spoke some English. To interview we typed and used a translation and his daughter helped. He first came to us looking for short term work; we created a position at a client and as it turns out 1.5 years later he still is there and he loves it. He loves the people he’s with and he’s even running the department he’s in now! So proud of him!
  • We had a 2nd shift employee who needed funds to get to work the next day, and it was his first week on assignment. He had worked so we went ahead and cut him an advance – and then stopped at the client to drop it off on our way home. A small human act that carrier more weight than we knew. It turns out he had been homeless living in a shelter with limited resources. Getting him the gas money empowered him to get to work!
  • Eddy – he came to us from some volunteer work we do in the community and originally it was for a resume, and it turned into an entry level position. Then he went radio silent on us and we learned he was in a major/airlift accident. He took the time to recover and came back, stronger than ever because he’s no longer in an entry level position but working  a weekend shift, OT during the week to help the team and operating forklift. Way to go Eddy, love being on your team!
  • Megan works for us and has worked multiple assignments. The client called to tell us she didn’t want to be hired because she loved her benefits with us and being our employee – we called to connect and she said “You’re the best agency I’ve ever worked for, you care about people and your jobs…I can always go to you” ❤
  • Bobbi’s husband had just left and took everything, she was desperate for a job; with an opportunity in her field we were stuck, but with the creative thinking and suggestions of our team she was open minded and tried something new – flash forward, and her life is changed – and she’s thriving. Love that teamwork!
  • Jeremy worked for us about 13 years ago and was impacted by layoffs. Then he was called back and hired on perm. Flash forward a decade or so and now he’s our supervisor contact, and he remembered US and who he worked with specifically. SO COOL!
  • Tom finished his assignment, here’s what he had to say: Thank you so much for what seems like you’re really going to bat for me. I’ve been in absolute crisis mode for way too long now and you are finally presenting me with a realistic way out of this gigantic hole in these jobs so I am so grateful to you and to Vision all together. Ya’ll are rockstars – thanks Tom, YOU are a rockstar! 😊
  • Linda, thanks for referring us to a new client to grow our family.

This time of year brings so much joy and light, but as we know too well a lot of sadness. I just wanted to say I see you, and feel you – and I’m going to keep trying to shed more light – for you and me.

See you tomorrow,

Heather
