Recently Laid Off? How to Bounce Back & Find Your Next Gig

We’ve been closely watching the tech sector layoffs and are prepared for a potential recession. Knowing you’re not alone is essential with the number of releases growing nationwide. And having a great team to help can be critical to getting back on your feet. Here is our best advice for getting over your layoff and finding your next gig.

It’s Okay to Grieve

The most important thing is to give yourself time. It’s okay to feel sad about losing a job. That’s the grief you’re feeling, and it’s perfectly normal. Take time to be angry or sad about the situation because if you bury those feelings, you’ll only face them later when you’re unprepared.

What Do You Enjoy?

Now is also an excellent time to review what you want out of your career. What do you enjoy doing the most? What industries, no matter how far-fetched, would bring you joy? Make a list of these things and be as inclusive as possible.

What Are Your Top Skills?

Make another list. This one is of all your top skills. What are you specifically good at? List everything you can think of from your previous experience and education. Once you have both lists, cross-reference them. Where can you use your skills to do something that you enjoy?

Refresh Your Resume and Collateral

If you haven’t already, take this time to review your resume and other professional collateral. Update your resume to reflect your accomplishments and any skills you added in your previous position. Create a cover letter template you can customize to make applying more efficient. Review your social media and update it to reflect your professional self. And if you haven’t created a website that can act as a professional portfolio, you may also want to do that.

Contact References

Before you begin applying again, talk to your references. You want to ensure you have the right people in your corner who will speak to potential employers about your professional experience. Talk to previous managers and get permission to include their contact information in your reference list. You can also let them know you’re looking for a new job and to keep you in mind if they hear of anything.
